Rhino Attacked at Thaba Manzi
Last week there was another poaching attack at one of Silent Heroes Foundation’s supported projects in South Africa, Thaba Manzi Veterinary Services, run by Dr. Jana Pretorius. Although the veterinary compound is surrounded by high fencing and is guarded at all times by armed security, poachers seem undeterred and continue to attack.

Internships for Veterinary Students
Silent Heroes has partnered with Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine to offer projects for students interested in participating in Cornell's Expanding Horizons program. The program offers paid internships to students through a rigorous selection process, and encourages students to gain international experience in veterinary medicine. Students are required to design a research project to contribute to the field of veterinary science, as well as to give back to the local communities in which they work. Two students were awarded internships for projects supported by Silent Heroes for summer 2011. Chelsea Anderson will work with Dr. David Hyeroba of the Community Animal Health Centre in Entebbe, Uganda, and will investigate the prevalence of Ehrlichia (an intracellular parasite) in the local dog population. Her work will also involve treatment of infected animals, general veterinary care for animals that visit the clinic, and community outreach and education. Through a corporate donation from IDEXX, SHF will provide Chelsea with testing supplies for her project. Sarah Dumas will work with the Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO) village poultry project in Lusaka, Zambia. She will be developing a veterinary care protocol to improve production and elevate the overall health of the birds. SHF is working to provide vaccines for her work, as well as an on-going supply of vaccines for the continuation of the village poultry project. COMACO is stewarded by the Wildlife Conservation Society, and uses a cooperative business model along with market incentives to encourage sustainable agricultural and natural resource management practices, including the stopping of poaching and rampant deforestation.
SHF has also partnered with the University of Pretoria Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, South Africa, to offer three additional internship opportunities to veterinary students, including opportunities in wildlife and conservation, production animal, and equine medicine. Internships will be offered to veterinary students nationwide in 2012.

SHF would like to extend a gracious thank you to Kimberly-Clark Healthcare for their recent donation of an 18 month supply of disposable face masks to aid our Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. These masks will be distributed to all visitors and park staff in close range of the gorillas, to help decrease the risk of disease transmission from humans to the gorillas. This donation is a huge step towards saving the gorillas from extinction, and we are eternally grateful for Kimberly-Clark's support!
